Juglans regia, commonly known as the common walnut, is a large deciduous tree widely cultivated for its edible nuts and valuable hardwood. Native to parts of Central Asia and the Mediterranean region, it is now grown in many temperate areas around the world. The tree can grow up to 20–30 meters tall and develops a broad, rounded crown that provides dense shade.
The foliage consists of large pinnate leaves made up of several smooth-edged leaflets. These leaves are bright green during the growing season and release a distinctive aromatic scent when crushed. In spring, the tree produces small greenish flowers. Male flowers appear as long hanging catkins, while female flowers grow in small clusters. These are later followed by round green fruits that split open when mature, revealing the well-known walnut nut inside a hard shell.
Common walnut trees grow best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils and require full sunlight for healthy growth and good nut production. They are relatively hardy but perform best in areas with warm summers and cool winters. The nuts are rich in healthy oils, protein, and nutrients, making them popular for fresh eating, baking, and cooking.
In addition to its edible nuts, the tree is also valued for its beautiful dark brown timber. Walnut wood is strong, durable, and highly prized for making high-quality furniture, cabinetry, veneers, and decorative woodwork. Because of its ornamental form, broad canopy, and attractive foliage, the common walnut is also sometimes planted as a landscape or shade tree in large gardens and parks.
