Botanically, it belongs to the genus Schlumbergera, which is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil.

Unlike desert cacti, Zygocactus is an epiphytic plant, meaning it naturally grows on trees and rocks in humid environments. It has flat, segmented green stems that arch beautifully over pots and hanging baskets. During its blooming season—usually late autumn or early winter—it produces striking tubular flowers in shades of pink, red, white, orange, or purple. Zygocactus thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers well-draining, slightly moist soil. It requires more regular watering than desert cacti but should not sit in waterlogged soil. Cooler temperatures and longer nights help encourage flowering.
