Cercis ‘Avondale’ is a compact, deciduous ornamental tree known for its striking display of vivid magenta-pink flowers that bloom in early spring, even before the leaves emerge.

Foliage: Large, heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring as striking reddish-purple with a velvety sheen, deepen to purplish-black, then fade to purplish-green by summer. Autumn colour is vivid yellow to orange.

Bark: Starts dark reddish-brown, becoming rougher and greyer with age.

Fruit: Pods (50-80 mm) are noted overseas but not recorded in Australia.

Growth Habit: Open and low-branching with a flat-topped canopy; young branches show a distinctive zig-zag pattern

Flowers: Masses of small, pink, pea-like flowers bloom directly on branches before foliage emerges in spring.

Size: Grows to approximately 5 metres tall and 5 metres wide.

Ornamental Value: Highly decorative tree with seasonal interest from spring through autumn.

Ideal for small gardens or feature planting, ‘Avondale’ is loved for its vibrant color and manageable size. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun to part shade.
