Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’

Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ — commonly known as the Japanese Maple ‘Atropurpureum’ — is a highly ornamental deciduous tree prized for its rich red to deep purple foliage and graceful form. Native to Japan and Korea, this small tree typically grows 3–5 metres tall, developing an elegant, rounded canopy with finely divided, palmate leaves.

In spring, its new leaves emerge a vivid crimson-red, deepening to a rich burgundy or purple through summer, and finally glowing bright scarlet in autumn. The delicate branching structure adds year-round beauty, even when bare in winter.

‘Atropurpureum’ thrives best in a sheltered position with partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It is ideal as a feature tree in gardens, courtyards, or Japanese-style landscapes, where its colour and shape provide stunning seasonal contrast and elegance.
