Dichondra ‘ Silver Falls ‘

Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’ is a striking ornamental plant valued for its elegant, cascading growth and luminous silver foliage. Its small, rounded leaves are covered in fine hairs that give them a soft, velvety texture and a shimmering metallic appearance. When sunlight touches the foliage, the plant seems to glow, creating a beautiful waterfall-like effect as the long stems spill downward.

Native to dry regions of the Americas, Silver Falls naturally tolerates heat and sunny conditions. It performs best in full sun, where its colour becomes brighter and more intense, though it can also adapt to light partial shade. The plant prefers well-drained soil, as overly wet conditions can cause root problems. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant, making it suitable for warm climates and low-maintenance gardens.

The trailing stems can grow up to 1–1.5 meters long under ideal conditions, making it perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes, raised beds, and tall containers. It also works beautifully as a ground cover, forming a soft, silvery carpet that gently spreads across the soil. Garden designers often use it to soften hard edges of pathways, stone walls, or pots.

Although it produces small, greenish-yellow flowers, they are subtle and not the main feature. The true charm of Silver Falls lies in its flowing form and cool-toned foliage, which pairs especially well with purple, pink, blue, or deep red flowering plants.
