Aloe plicatilis, commonly known as the Fan Aloe, is a striking succulent native to South Africa, admired for its architectural form, fan-shaped leaf arrangement, and ornamental appeal. Unlike typical rosette aloes, this species grows with distinctively flattened, fan-like branches, creating a dramatic and sculptural appearance that makes it a favorite for both gardens and container displays.
The leaves are thick, fleshy, and green to grey-green, arranged in two opposite rows along the fan-shaped branches, giving it a highly symmetrical, almost geometric look. Each leaf is strap-shaped, with smooth margins and a slightly recurved tip. The plant grows as a small tree or large shrub, reaching heights of up to 6 meters (20 feet) in the wild, though it is often smaller when cultivated. Its woody stems develop with age, adding to the plant’s architectural interest.
In late winter to early spring, Aloe plicatilis produces tall, upright flower spikes with tubular, bright orange-red to coral flowers. These blooms attract sunbirds and pollinators, adding seasonal interest and wildlife value to the garden.
This aloe thrives in full sun or partial shade, preferring well-drained soil and minimal watering once established, making it extremely drought-tolerant. It is suited to rock gardens, xeriscaping, or as a dramatic specimen plant in containers or landscape designs.
