Macadamia is a genus of evergreen trees native to Australia, widely cultivated for their rich, edible nuts. These medium-sized trees typically grow 6–15 meters tall and develop a dense, rounded canopy with glossy, dark green leaves. The leaves are thick and leathery, sometimes with slightly spiny edges, giving the tree an attractive ornamental appearance.
In spring and early summer, macadamia trees produce long, hanging clusters of small creamy white or pale pink flowers. These flowers are followed by round, green husked fruits that contain the well-known macadamia nut inside a very hard shell. The kernels are creamy, buttery in flavor, and highly valued for their nutritional benefits.
Macadamia trees grow best in warm, subtropical to tropical climates and prefer deep, well-drained soils with plenty of sunlight. They require regular watering during establishment but become moderately drought tolerant once mature.
The nuts are widely used in baking, confectionery, desserts, and snack foods. Besides their commercial value as a nut crop, macadamia trees are also planted as ornamental trees in gardens and orchards because of their attractive foliage, graceful flowering clusters, and dense shade.
