Robinia ‘Mop Top’ (also known as Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Umbraculifera’) is a compact, grafted ornamental tree known for its distinctive round, mop-like canopy.
🌳 Description of Robinia Mop Top:
Foliage: Bright green, pinnate (fern-like) leaves that provide a lush, tropical look. Leaves turn yellow in autumn before falling.
Form: Grafted onto a tall trunk, the tree develops a dense, dome-shaped or ball-like head—hence the name “Mop Top”.
Height & Spread: Usually grows to about 3–4 metres high and wide, depending on graft height.
Flowers: Rarely flowers; unlike other Robinia varieties, this cultivar is mainly valued for its foliage and form.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing and easy to maintain once established.
Maintenance: Minimal pruning required—occasional shaping of the crown to maintain the mop form.
Ideal Use: Excellent for small gardens, courtyards, avenue planting, or as a feature tree in landscape designs.
Hardiness: Drought-tolerant once established and adapts to a wide range of soil types. Handles urban pollution well.
Sun Requirements: Prefers full sun for optimal canopy density.
