Melia azedarach
White Cedar

Melia azedarach, commonly known as White Cedar, Chinaberry, or Persian Lilac, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree valued for its ornamental beauty and shade. It typically grows between 6 to 15 metres tall, with a broad, rounded canopy and attractive, fern-like leaves that turn golden-yellow in autumn.

In spring, the tree produces masses of fragrant, star-shaped purple to lilac flowers, which are followed by clusters of round yellow berries that persist into winter. While visually appealing, the berries are toxic if ingested.

Melia azedarach thrives in full sun and adapts to a wide range of soils, showing good tolerance to drought, heat, and urban pollution. It is often used as a shade tree in streetscapes, parks, and large gardens. Though low-maintenance, occasional pruning helps maintain its shape and health.
