Magnolia yulan is a classic deciduous magnolia native to China, admired for its large, fragrant, white flowers and elegant tree form. Often called the “Yulan Magnolia” or “White Magnolia,” it is one of the oldest cultivated magnolia species and has a long history of use in gardens and cultural symbolism.
Flowering in early spring before the leaves appear, Magnolia yulan produces large, goblet-shaped blossoms that are pure white with a subtle, sweet fragrance. The blooms are held upright on bare branches, creating a striking, dramatic display.
This species grows into a medium to large tree, typically reaching 10–15 meters in height with a broadly spreading, vase-shaped canopy. Its smooth gray bark and well-structured branches add ornamental interest even when the tree is not in flower.
Fresh green leaves emerge after flowering, forming a dense summer canopy, and may turn yellow in autumn before dropping.
Magnolia yulan thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is hardy in temperate climates and works well as a specimen tree, in large gardens, parks, or along avenues. Its combination of elegant form, fragrant white flowers, and historical significance makes it a timeless choice for ornamental planting.
