In fall, it produces round, green husks containing hard-shelled, oily nuts with a robust, earthy flavor, commonly used in baking and confections. Black Walnut trees prefer full sun and deep, well-drained soils. They are also known for releasing juglone, a natural chemical that can inhibit the growth of nearby plants.
