Juglans nigra, commonly known as the black walnut, is a large deciduous tree native to North America and valued for its nutritious nuts and high-quality timber. It is a fast-growing tree that can reach heights of 20–30 meters with a tall, straight trunk and a broad, rounded canopy.

The tree has long, pinnate leaves made up of many narrow leaflets that create a soft, feathery appearance. In spring, it produces small greenish flowers. Male flowers grow in long hanging catkins, while female flowers appear in small clusters and later develop into round green fruits. These fruits contain the black walnut nut inside a thick, hard shell.

Black walnut trees prefer deep, fertile, well-drained soils and grow best in full sun. They are hardy and adaptable but require plenty of space because of their large size. The tree also releases a natural compound called juglone from its roots and leaves, which can inhibit the growth of some nearby plants.

The nuts have a rich, strong flavor and are commonly used in baking, desserts, and cooking. In addition to the edible nuts, black walnut is highly prized for its dark, durable wood. The timber is widely used for fine furniture, cabinets, flooring, veneers, and decorative woodwork. Because of its impressive size and attractive foliage, it is also sometimes planted as a shade tree in large landscapes and parks.
