Climbing Hydrangea

Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris is a vigorous, deciduous climbing shrub admired for its elegant, lacecap-like white flowers and ability to cover walls, fences, and trellises. It produces flat, fragrant flower clusters in late spring to early summer, with small fertile flowers in the centre surrounded by showy sterile blooms, creating a delicate and airy appearance.
The foliage is dark green and heart-shaped, turning yellow in autumn before dropping. Climbing hydrangea grows slowly at first but can eventually reach 9–12 metres in height, clinging to surfaces with aerial roots. Its woody stems provide structure, and it can also be trained over pergolas or grown as a groundcover in shaded areas.
This plant prefers well-drained, fertile soil and thrives in partial to full shade, making it ideal for north-facing walls or shady corners where other climbers may struggle. Once established, it is relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of cold climates.
With its fragrant white blooms, lush foliage, and versatile climbing habit, the climbing hydrangea adds charm, texture, and year-round interest to walls, fences, and shaded garden spaces.
