Casuarina glauca ‘ Cousin It ‘
$24.00
Casuarina glauca ‘Cousin It’ is a striking, low-growing Australian native groundcover admired for its unusual, cascading foliage and tough nature. This dwarf selection of Casuarina forms a dense, carpet-like mat of long, slender, needle-like branchlets that drape gracefully over the ground or spill beautifully from containers. The foliage is soft to the touch and rich green in colour, creating a flowing, textured effect in the landscape. It typically grows only about 20–30 cm in height but can spread widely, often reaching 1–2 metres or more across.
The plant thrives in full sun and performs best in well-drained soil, though it adapts well to sandy, coastal, and even slightly poor soils. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and can withstand wind, salt spray, and light frost, making it an excellent choice for exposed or seaside gardens. It requires very little maintenance and rarely needs pruning, except for occasional trimming to maintain shape or control spread.
‘Cousin It’ is especially valued for its versatility. It works beautifully as a groundcover to suppress weeds, stabilise slopes, and reduce soil erosion. It also looks stunning when planted in raised beds, rockeries, hanging baskets, or large pots where its trailing foliage can cascade over the edges. In mass plantings, it creates a lush, soft green blanket that adds movement and texture to modern and native garden designs.
