Beaucarnea recurvata ‘ Ponytail Palm ‘

The Ponytail Palm, scientifically known as Beaucarnea recurvata, is a unique and eye-catching ornamental plant admired for its unusual trunk and cascading foliage. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but a succulent plant native to Mexico. It is especially popular as an indoor decorative plant because of its sculptural appearance and low maintenance needs.

This plant features a swollen, bulb-like base called a caudex, which stores water and helps it tolerate dry conditions. From the top of the trunk, long, narrow, arching leaves grow in a fountain-like cluster, resembling a ponytail—hence the name. The leaves are bright green, slightly curly, and can grow quite long, creating a graceful, flowing effect.

Ponytail Palm grows slowly and can reach about 1–2 meters tall indoors, while outdoor plants in warm climates can grow much taller over time. It prefers bright light and well-drained soil, and it does not require frequent watering due to its drought-tolerant nature. Overwatering is one of the most common problems, so the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings.
