Pouteria caimito, commonly known as abiu, is a tropical evergreen fruit tree native to the Amazon region of South America. It is widely grown in tropical climates for its sweet, flavorful fruits and attractive foliage.
The abiu tree typically grows 8–15 meters tall and develops a dense, rounded canopy of glossy, dark green leaves. It produces small, fragrant flowers that develop into round or oval fruits with smooth yellow skin when ripe. The fruit contains soft, translucent white pulp that is very sweet and aromatic, often described as having a caramel or vanilla-like flavor. The flesh is juicy and jelly-like in texture, usually surrounding one to several dark seeds.
Abiu trees thrive in warm, humid climates with well-drained, fertile soil and plenty of sunlight. Regular watering and balanced fertilization help support healthy growth and fruit production. The tree is relatively fast growing and begins to bear fruit after a few years under suitable conditions.
The fruit is mainly enjoyed fresh and can also be used in smoothies, desserts, and fruit salads. Because of its unique flavor, attractive golden fruit, and ornamental foliage, abiu is a popular choice for tropical home gardens and orchards.
