Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’

Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ is a compact, evergreen magnolia prized for its glossy foliage and large, fragrant white flowers. A dwarf form of the Southern Magnolia, it offers the same classic beauty in a much smaller, more manageable size.

Flowering from late spring through summer — and often intermittently in warm climates — ‘Little Gem’ produces creamy white, cup-shaped blooms up to 15–20 cm across. The flowers are richly scented, filling the air with a sweet, lemony fragrance. Each bloom contrasts beautifully against the dark green, leathery leaves, which have a distinctive rusty-brown, velvety underside.

This cultivar grows in a dense, upright, pyramidal shape, typically reaching about 4–6 meters in height and 2–3 meters in width. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, narrow spaces, screening, or feature planting near entrances and patios.

‘Little Gem’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is relatively low maintenance, needing only light pruning to maintain shape. Regular watering during dry periods helps keep the foliage lush and healthy.
