Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’
Bare Rooted

$35.00

Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ is an elegant deciduous shrub prized for its dramatic, finely dissected purple-black foliage that closely resembles the delicate leaves of a Japanese maple. Its bold foliage provides outstanding colour and texture from spring through autumn, making it a stunning focal point in gardens and landscapes.

In late spring to early summer, the plant is covered with large clusters of soft pink, lightly lemon-scented flowers that stand out beautifully against the dark foliage. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. By late summer to autumn, the flowers develop into glossy black berries that are loved by birds and can be harvested for making jams, syrups, jellies, and wines when properly cooked.

‘Black Lace’ grows vigorously to around 2–4 metres tall and wide, forming an upright, arching habit. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil, although it adapts well to a wide range of growing conditions once established. Regular pruning in late winter or early spring encourages fresh growth and helps maintain a compact, attractive shape.

Perfect as a feature plant, informal hedge, mixed border specimen, or wildlife-friendly addition, Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ offers season-long interest with its unique foliage, fragrant flowers, ornamental berries, and excellent garden performance.
